Bringing Jesus into Prisons

Just as Paul and Silas brought Jesus into the prison at Philippi (Acts 16:23-40) so the Bible School endeavours to bring Jesus into the prisons of Southern Africa. Prison heads have said that the study of God's word has made a tremendous impact on the lives of the prisoners in their care. At present we have 2946 prisoners on our mailing list. Isn't this the best way to fight crime in our country? Our lessons and certificates are free of charge to anyone, including prisoners. We also give Bibles to those who do not have them as funds permit us. Donations to help with this work would be gladly accepted.

Goodwood prison choir, under the direction of Warder Joey Springveldt, presented an excellent programme at the Parow Seventh-day Adventist church earlier this year. Since then they have been allowed to perform for many public functions. On November 1 they sang at the Goodwood S.D.A. church.

The Minister of Correctional Services, Mr Ben Skosana, invited two of the Bible School staff (Heather Tredoux and Joel Mgcotyelwa) to attend the Budget Speech at the National Assembly on 26 May 2003. Joel is seen standing with some of the heads of prisons and prison chaplains just prior to going into the house of Parliament, Cape Town.

Eugene TerreBlanche offers prayer in the courtroom in Potchefstroom on 13 November 2003. His lawyer, Gerrie Basson, is the man seated behind Eugene with his hand on his shoulder. Eugene is currently serving a sentence at Rooigrond Prison for attempted murder. He appeared in court on November 13 on five additional charges of terrorism. He pleaded guilty. He received a suspended sentence which I understand to mean that he will not serve time in prison for this unless he commits a similar crime. In his prayer he thanked his Creator for his mercy which "stretches farther than man can dream." He asked God that all the soldiers of the AWB, the PAC and ANC be released since "the war is over." He also asked God to help the leaders of the far right and the state to realize that these men should make peace and go home to their families. Eugene has just completed translating one of our Bible School courses, NEW MILLENNIUM BIBLE COURSE into Afrikaans. It is not yet printed.

VOP staff (Heather left and Seloma, right) visit Martie TerreBlanche (center) at her home in Ventersdorp. Heather, Seloma and Seth were returning from having had a stall for the Bible School at Tzaneen Agricultural Show. Martie typed Eugene's handwritten translation and said "Ek het baie geleer (I learned a lot)."
